Lined Up: Vestments and Hookah Pipes.

These two pictures appear next to each other in iPhotos on my phone and were taken within the space of a couple of minutes, in Valletta, capital of Malta.

(I must stress that the vestments and the hookah pipes were not in the same place!)

I took the picture of the priest’s robes when we were sneaking out of a church through a back door, having inadvertently got ourselves locked inside the building.

It took ages to find our way out of the church. It was one of the major churches on the island and had a warren of dark corridors and ante-rooms, all of which were out of bounds to the public.

All the doors were hidden behind heavy curtains, though not every curtain was concealing a possible exit route. It was like a video game. Every door was locked, but, “needs must” as we didn’t want to wait until evening service for the front door to be unlocked.

Once we’d escaped back into the sunshine and our eyes adjusted to the bright light, the first thing I saw when we turned a corner was a line of hookah pipes outside a Shisha café.

The walls of the church provide a good backdrop to the picture, don’t you think?

You just never know what’s around the next corner, do you?
